General
A native of Japan, the Shimpaku Juniper is a fantastic bonsai subject. Limbs are quite flexible when small to medium in size. Shimpakus are easy to wire and prune. They are also easy to maintain.

Typical Styles
Informal Upright (Moyogi)
Windswept style (Fukinagashi)
Formal Cascade (Kengai)
Driftwood Style (Sharamiki)

Sun and Temperature
Full sun, but protect from extreme heat and hard frosts.

Watering
Daily watering and misting in growing season. Don't let soil dry fully in any season.

Feeding
Feed every two to three weeks from early Spring through Fall with a break during hottest Summer.

Pruning/Wiring
Remove foliage tips by pinching. Wiring is best done in Fall or Winter to allow limbs to set. Watch for wire cutting in other seasons. Shimpaku also are nice subjects for Jins and Shari.

Repotting
Repot young trees yearly and older trees every two years. Do not reduce root mass too ambitiously and place in soil that drains well. Spring is the best time for repotting.

Propagation
From soft wood cuttings.

Pests
Red spider mites
