General
A classic bonsai subject, the Black Pine has been used for bonsai in Japan for centuries. It is not a good tree for the inexperienced or impatient bonsai artist. A good Black Pine will generally require decades of training to produce the desired bonsai.

Formal Upright (Chokkan)
Informal Upright (Moyogi)

Sun and Temperature
Full sun, but prefers climates avoid extreme heat. Protect from extreme Winter cold.

Watering
Water daily (check first to avoid overwatering). Moderate watering in the Winter.

Feeding
Monthly except for winter. Likes slight acidity.

Pruning/Wiring
Remove candles during growing season (many sources discuss a number of approaches for this). Remove old needles from limbs.

Repotting
Repot bi-yearly with slightly acidic, good draining soil.

Propagation
From seed.

Pests
Scale, Bark Beetles, Sawfly Larvae Caterpillars, Aphids, Mealy bugs, Moths, Red Spiders
