Fig - Ficus SEND THIS PAGE TO A FRIEND

General
Figs contain a large number of tropical species (over 600). Ficus Retusa and Ficus Benjamina are the most common used in Bonsai, but many other varieties may be trained. Ficus make good beginner trees as they are forgiving of varying degrees of light and watering. Some varieties feature beautiful aerial roots ("banyan").

Typical Styles
Formal Upright (Chokkan)
Informal Upright (Moyogi)
Root Over Rock (Sekijojo)

Sun and Temperature
Full sun to low-light situations. Protect from cold conditions (under 15C/60F). Bring indoors during Winter.

Watering
Water well during growing season. Reduce during Winter, but mist and keep as humid as possible.

Feeding
Bi-weekly during the growing season, monthly otherwise.

Pruning/Wiring
Prune shoots back to restrict growth. Leaf pruning in summer can reduce leaf size. Wire limbs when younger and small, but watch for wire cuts. Mature limbs do not move well.

Propagate easily from cuttings and air-layering.

Pests
Scale, eelworm, thrips, and root rot.
